On page one of Soul Ferry, naïve girl-next-door and high school senior Ari Taylor dies in a head-on car collision. She wakes in the Summer province of a lush afterworld known as The Seasons, and an impossibly beautiful “advocate” named Stephan promises her a perfect new existence, with him as her companion. Which is of course too good to be true, starting with the fact that she must prove she has committed to her new home with a sacred act. In her case, that happens to be losing her virginity.
Ari struggles to accept she has died, even though the life she lost brought her little joy: living in a small, boring town, a dysfunctional, abusive family, a part-time job in a thrift shop and the grind of high school where both the White and Black girls treat her like a pariah because she’s unpopular and biracial—and the boys ignore her entirely. Daydreams, hanging out with her best friend Eva and Eva’s lovely family, and her deceased father’s family on their farm in rural North Carolina are the few bright spots in Ari’s small world.
Ari stumbles across Joe Cates, a classmate who committed suicide a year earlier, which proves that she is indeed truly dead. And both Joe and Stephan confirm her growing suspicions that not all is as rosy as it seems—Ari is personally in danger and The Seasons is on the verge of civil war.
Cruel, devilishly handsome Prince Donavan of the Winter province aspires to control The Seasons. He commands thousands of bloodthirsty worshippers and launches a violent uprising against the Arena, a flawed, enigmatic organization that runs the Seasons. Ari is unnerved to hear that Prince Donavan and Stephan share a dark history and then she’s terrified to learn that Donavan is demanding that the Arena turn her over to him.
Soon Ari’s mind, body and soul transform as she becomes immersed in the political and ideological battle between the provinces. She gains astonishing powers, powerful new friends and dangerous enemies. And her complex, erotic romance with Stephan is further complicated by her psychological attraction to an angel-like figure named Joshua who wants her for his own.
As Ari and Joe join forces with a small, brave team at the core of the fight against Donavan’s rebellion, they individually discover their fears and darkest desires. They must survive a whirlwind of treachery and seduction in a fight between good and evil within their new world—and within themselves—to help create a more tolerant, balanced afterworld.
Author’s Note: Like everyone else, I wonder what happens when we die. Perhaps nothing. Or perhaps … everything. Devout or atheist, straight, gay or bi-sexual—there’s something for everyone here. Soul Ferry is an ambitious walk on the wild side of one possible afterworld, and I’m hopeful you’ll give this truly creative first novel a try.
Weighing it at 149,000 words, it is indeed immersive, yet fast-paced and I am currently outlining the next novel in the series. At this time, I do not have a specific number of sequels in mind. This work has been described as “wildly sexy” but “had too much plot” for one erotica agent so it is definitely erotic romance. This novel has haunted me for years like a movie I see, hear, smell, touch and taste in my dreams—and reverse engineered into words. I’m hopeful you’ll enjoy it, that you’ll love to visit this world as much as I do and represent me in bringing it to print. At your request, I would be pleased to send sample chapters or the full novel.
